Beach Fires Guidelines & Responsible Practices

Summer is in full swing, and with the warm weather, wide beaches and all Solana Beach has to offer, it is no wonder why people flock to our community. However, with the increased outdoor recreational activity, it crucial for all residents and visitors to be aware of beach regulations. With the seasonal increase in fires at the beach, we have seen an uptick of illegal fires made from wooden pallets which, once burnt, leave hot coals, and nails in our newly placed sand which can endanger beachgoers.

All beach fires must be limited to an elevated and contained fire pit (bring your own), and can be either wood or fuel burning. Help preserve our beaches by following our Beach Fire Regulations and a “Pack-in, Pack-out” policy. This means any items brought to the beach, including burnt materials, must be taken away when you leave. Dumping burnt material in city trash bins can spark fires, or cause the plastic bins to melt and leak, creating environmental hazards, causing harm to local wildlife and creating unsightly messes.

Please follow these Fires on the Beach Guidelines to ensure everyone's safety:

  • All fires must be contained within portable fire device that is less than 3 feet in diameter, elevated off the ground, and has a solid metal bottom with sides to enclose the fire.
  • All beach fires should be set at least 10 feet away from cliff edges due the potential bluff instability.
  • Fires on the beach are allowed only between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM.

The following actions are prohibited:

  • Burning fires directly in the sand or in a "fire ring" without a bottom
  • Burning pallets or any wood containing nails, screws, bolts, or other hardware.
  • Leaving fires unattended at any time.
  • Disposing of burnt materials in the sand or city trash cans (pack-in, pack-out policy).
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach or in the park areas.

Maintaining the beauty and safety of Solana Beach is a collective effort. While lifeguards oversee daytime activities, nighttime adherence to regulations relies on community responsibility. Instances of prohibited beach fires and alcohol consumption not only violate local laws but also compromise the natural beauty of our coastline. Let’s work together to protect our beloved beach environment and enjoy our summer safely.

Traffic Advisory:

Del Mar Races Opening Day

The highly anticipated Del Mar Races Opening Day is today, July 18th. This event is known for drawing big crowds, and we want to help your day run as smoothly as possible. Please plan for heavy traffic delays throughout the weekend, especially along Via de la Valle and nearby cross streets. Opening Day is always a busy affair, so be sure to allow for extra travel time. The 2025 summer racing season runs through Sunday, September 7th, with races being held Thursday through Sunday.

Summer City Hall Art Gallery

The Solana Beach City Hall Gallery presents For the Love of Textiles + Art, on view now through August 29th. This joint exhibition by artists Sherri Scott and Keelee Lovaas explores nature, texture, and transformation through layered landscapes and sculptural forms. Sherri work blends fine art and textiles to reflect the shifting light and energy of land and sea, while Keelee uses clay, thread, and light to create pieces that balance structure and unraveling. Together, their work invites a quiet, multisensory experience rooted in process and material. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, August 2nd, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM to meet the artists and view the exhibit.

Back-to-School Supplies Donation Drive

The Solana Beach Cares Back-to-School Supplies Drive is halfway through and there's still time to help! Solana Beach schools start August 11th, and your support can help local students start strong. From backpacks to notebooks, your contributions help set students up for success. Donation bins are available at Solana Beach City Hall and La Colonia Community Center during regular business hours through the end of the month.
