Protect Active Nests This Breeding Season

The City’s Climate & Resiliency Commission reminds our community that nesting season runs from February to August, and many native birds are still actively raising their young. While we often picture large nests in trees, many birds nest in shrubs and even garden vines. Some nests are so small, like the tiny 1-inch Anna’s Hummingbird nest, which are easy to miss. To protect these active nests, please avoid trimming or pruning during this time. If brush management is needed to ensure your property is fire safe, please look closely before trimming! Federal and California laws protect nesting birds, so be sure to notify your gardener, landlord, or HOA of these environmentally friendly practices during this time of year. Thank you for helping protect our local wildlife!

Explore the City's New Tree Canopy Map

The City has partnered with i-Tree Eco to launch a Tree Inventory that highlights the benefits and makeup of the tree canopy on City property. Trees not only enhance our landscape but also support environmental health and community well-being. Through this interactive site, users can explore dashboards and maps to learn about tree species, total counts, and the value of their environmental contributions. This analysis is the first step in the City’s efforts to expand its urban tree canopy as outlined in the Climate Action Plan’s Enhance Land Use & Natural Solutions. Establishing this baseline helps guide future actions to increase tree coverage with climate-friendly vegetation in our City. You can listen to the staff presentation from the July 2nd, 2025 City Council meeting to learn more, or simply click below to check it out!

Repurposed Succulents Find a New Home

Along the Coastal Rail Trail

Recently, our Public Works team saw the perfect opportunity to enhance pedestrian safety at the South Sierra crosswalk near Fletcher Cove, and repurpose mature succulents to the Coastal Rail Trail. After noticing that some of our succulents were beginning to impede visibility and obstruct the pedestrian crosswalk at Fletcher Cove, the team carefully relocated and pruned the vegetation in a way that ensured both pedestrian safety and the plants’ successful relocation. This sustainable approach reflects our City’s commitment to a Clean & Green Solana Beach while prioritizing pedestrian and traffic safety, especially during the busy summer season. Be sure to check out the replanted vegetation surrounding the new Torrey Pine Tree at the south end of the CRT, and remember to drive safe!

Clean Up to Prevent Mosquitos

With the warmer weather, we have seen an increase in mosquitos around Solana Beach. The first step to protect yourself and your home from mosquitos is to prevent breeding by promptly emptying standing water from watering cans, plant drip pans, and fixing leaky faucets and hoses. Keep your patio clear of potential breeding debris and remember to wear long sleeves, pants, or use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil or lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 when outdoors.

To further help keep mosquitos out of our community, the County Vector Control Program (VCP) will be conducting another routine aerial larvicide drop treatment on July 17th and 18th with helicopters to treat hard to reach areas. These granular larvicides target mosquito larvae specifically and are safe for people, pets, plants, and wildlife. Additional applications are scheduled for August and September.
