| The City and the Solana Beach Public Arts Commission invite you to submit designs for a new storm drain outlet metal grate at Fletcher Cove Beach. The selected design will contribute to the beautification of this beloved coastal spot and is part of a larger Fletcher Cove Ramp Remodel project that aims to enhance the overall design of Fletcher Cove Beach.
Submission Deadline: Monday, June 17th, at 5:30 PM
Artist Stipend: $2,000 for the completion of a comprehensive design.
Project Objective
The existing dissipator grate, installed around 1998, is showing its age and requires replacement. Aligned with the City Council Workplan, the project aims to enhance the overall dissipator storm drain structure at the base of Fletcher Cove Beach. This involves crafting a unique and visually appealing new design for the metal grate, elevating the structure's aesthetics.
In essence, the City seeks a public artist to create something captivating rather than just swapping out the existing grate design.
Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), the City invites artists to present comprehensive designs for a new storm drain outlet metal grate located at the entrance of Fletcher Cove Beach, the City's premier beach destination.
Project Details
It is important to note that the artist(s) will not be responsible for manufacturing or installing the grate. Instead, the selected design will be used as a conceptual blueprint for the final product.
the selected design will be incorporated into the Engineering's Department official bid for the broader Fletcher Cove Ramp Remodel project. Subsequently, the chosen contractor will be responsible for both manufacturing and installing the selected design.
Although the artist won't be directly involved in manufacturing the grate, familiarity with metalwork is essential to ensure that the design aligns closely with required specifications. This ensures that the contractor can replicate it accurately. The Engineering Department will collaborate closely with the contractor to develop a shop design that closely adheres to the artist's chosen concept.
Design Requirements
The selected artist(s) will need to provide a design proposal that meets the engineering specifications outlined in the RFP. Please review the website, RFP, and Exhibit A for the required design specifications.
We encourage artists to bring their creativity and vision to this project, helping us to create a distinctive feature that will contribute to the beautification of Fletcher Cove Beach. The design should:
- Reflect the unique coastal character and community spirit of Solana Beach
- Be inspired by local landmarks such as Fletcher Cove Park, the Coastal Rail Trail, and existing public art.
- Enhance the visual appeal of the storm drain structure
