The larvicide used by the County consists of naturally-occurring bacteria that target mosquito larvae and prevent them from developing into biting adults. The products act specifically on mosquito larvae and will not harm people, pets, plants, or wildlife. Vector Control staff in identifiable uniforms and vehicles will be visible as they perform these applications at some known mosquito breeding sites.
It is also important to note that the particular mosquitos coming from the San Elijo Lagoon at this time are salt marsh mosquitoes, which is a species that does not carry and transmit diseases like the Wes Nile Virus. However, they do hatch, travel in swarms and can be aggressive, so this is the reason we are seeing increased activity in short periods.
