CDPH Warns Public Not to Consume Sport-Harvested Bivalve Shellfish from San Diego County

The California Department of Public Health has issued a warning against eating sport-harvested bivalve shellfish (mussels, clams, scallops, and oysters) due to dangerous levels of domoic acid, also known as amnesic shellfish poisoning. Domoic acid is linked to harmful algal blooms, and is a potent neurotoxin that naturally accumulates in shellfish and can cause serious illness or even death in humans when consumed. Cooking does not destroy the toxin.

This advisory applies only to shellfish caught through recreational or sport fishing along the southern coast of California. It does not apply to commercially harvested shellfish sold in stores or served in restaurants.

Domoic acid has also caused large numbers of marine mammals and birds along the Southern California coast to become ill or die after consuming contaminated invertebrates or fish. Please keep a safe distance from any sick or stranded marine wildlife. If you see any sick or deceased wildlife, please contact Marine Safety personnel immediately. For updates and more information, visit the County’s One Health Epidemiology website or CDPH’s advisory page.

Solana Beach Wins CPRS Spotlight Award for Spanish Academy Program

On Tuesday, April 8th, the City of Solana Beach received the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) District 12 Parks Make Life Better Spotlight Award for Best Program for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Spanish Academy. This prestigious award recognizes a recreational program that has made a substantial and meaningful impact in the community.

The 6-week program, held in partnership with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, broke down language barriers and built lasting trust between local law enforcement and the local Spanish-speaking community. Selected from a competitive group of nominees, this award highlights the City’s commitment to community well-being through meaningful programming.

Special thank you to everyone involved in making this program possible, including the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, Solana Beach Parks & Recreation Crew, and La Colonia’s residents who helped shape and support the Academy.

City Hall Gallery Opening Reception Highlights

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for the opening reception of Greatly I Dream: Health, Healing, Hope, Music, & Autism at the Solana Beach City Hall Gallery. The event featured a beautiful live musical performance by Terrence Partridge, who played both trumpet and keyboard, and Clayton who played the saxophone. Many families came out to support artist Jeremy Sicile-Kira and stayed to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and live entertainment. If you missed the reception, there’s still time to experience Jeremy’s colorful, synesthesia-inspired work on view now through June 23rd. Stop by the gallery and explore this inspiring celebration of art, music, and neurodiversity!
