The City of Solana Beach, in alignment with its City of Kindness initiative, is excited to announce a partnership with the North County Food Bank to raise money to feed those in need during these difficult times. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and the North County Food Bank chapter comprise the largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County. Through the North County Food Bank Chapter and a partnership of more than 500 nonprofits with feeding programs, the Food Bank provides nutritious food to individuals and families in need in communities throughout San Diego County.

Of San Diego County’s 3.2 million residents, 450,000 people face food insecurity every day. Of this number, 177,000 are children. Food insecurity means that little or no food is available at home, and those who are food insecure do not know how they will get their next meal. Currently, 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 5 children face food insecurity in San Diego County.

As a member of our North County community, the San Diego Food Bank needs the community’s help and support now more than ever with the COVID-19 crisis. The needs of the populations served are rapidly growing. Our fellow San Diego seniors, children, working families, and members of our military are facing increasing economic hardships as a result of layoffs, school closures, and health issues.

The Food Bank is currently serving over 350,000 San Diegans per month. These numbers have rapidly increased over the past few weeks. The Food Bank is also currently working with school districts to provide emergency food assistance for children in need, who are now home and no longer have subsidized breakfast and lunch. Consequently, their distribution lines have become longer and their resources are have been stretched to their limits.

The City is proud to partner with such an impactful organization to provide much-needed support to those in need. While we recognize that many people are facing similar economic hardships at this time, the City and the Food Bank are reaching out to those who can help and have set a collective goal of raising $5,000 during the month of April and encourages the support of our great community to reach or hopefully surpass that goal.
