A Native Plant Pollinator Garden Coming to City Hall!

The City is excited to share that a new native pollinator garden will soon take shape right in front of City Hall. As part of City's ongoing participation in the nationwide Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and the Climate Action Plan’s goals for restoring coastal habitat, this project is another meaningful step towards restoring natural habitats for the Western Monarch butterfly and other native pollinators. Monarch populations have declined by over 96% in the past two years alone, largely due to habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change. This community-driven effort was led by the Climate & Resiliency Commission and the SeaWeeders, a Solana Beach garden club, who helped design the space and raised $3,000 toward the project.

The community is invited to join the SeaWeeders Garden Club this Saturday, June 7th, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM for a fun, hands-on planting day where you can learn all about planting native, pollinator-friendly gardens. All ages are welcome and no gardening experience is needed! Thank you to the City’s Public Works team, who has already cleared the area by removing the tumbled river rocks, making way for a new garden to filled with native, low-water plants that will help pollinators thrive for years to come. Whether you have a green thumb or just want to lend a hand, come be part of this exciting effort to support pollinators.

Coyote Safety Tips for Pet Owners

Recent coyote activity in our community has caused concern among residents, especially pet owners. While these incidents are upsetting, coyotes are a natural part of our ecosystem and help control rodent populations. Attempts to remove or kill them are costly, inhumane, and ineffective, as new coyotes quickly move into vacated areas. The most effective and humane approach is to reduce attractants, understand coyote behavior, and use "hazing" techniques that scare off coyotes and help reinforce healthy boundaries between people, pets, and wildlife.

There are simple but important steps residents can take to prevent encounters:

  • Keep pets supervised: Don’t leave dogs or cats outside alone, especially at night. Always use a leash on walks.
  • Secure your property: Coyote-proof fencing should be at least 8 feet tall with a barrier that extends underground or includes devices like Coyote Rollers.
  • Eliminate food sources: Never feed coyotes. Remove pet food, trash, fallen fruit, and composted meat scraps from your yard.
  • Use hazing techniques: If a coyote approaches, make yourself big and loud. Yell, wave your arms, use a whistle or air horn, and continue until the coyote fully retreats.

Coyote behavior is shaped by human interaction. By taking these steps, you can avoid or reduce these unwanted visitations and help coyotes keep their distance.
