On March 24th, 2021, at the urging of the local SeaWeeders Garden Club and the City’s Climate Action Commission, and with unanimous support of our City Council, Mayor Heebner, on behalf of the City, signed the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge. The goal of the Pledge is to work with other mayors and local, state and national partners to restore and enhance habitat for monarchs right where people live, work, learn and play. By signing the Pledge, municipalities and other communities are committing to create habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators, and to educate residents about how they can make a difference at home and in their community.
With that goal in mind, the City has teamed with the SeaWeeders Garden Club to promote the planting of pollinator habitat throughout our community. In addition to planting milkweed and nectar plants in public places around town, we encourage you to nourish butterflies and provide host plants for their eggs and caterpillars in your garden. Why milkweed? Because it is the only host plant that female monarchs lay eggs on and the only plant monarch caterpillars eat.
The City and the SeaWeeders are conducting an event to provide milkweed seeds and/or plants to residents that wish to help in this effort. Sign up to collect milkweed seeds and/or plants at a contact-free, drive-through distribution on April 24th, 9:30 a.m. to noon, at the Boys & Girls Club, 533 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, west parking area. (Solana Beach residency and masks required.) The City will also be planting its first milkweed and nectar plant mini-garden at La Colonia Park on Friday, April 23rd.
Ten-seed packets and one-gallon native, narrow-leaf milkweed plants are being provided at no charge (thanks to the City and SeaWeeder support), but donations are welcome. Quantities are limited! So we are limiting distribution to 5 plants and/or 3 seed packets per family.
