The City of Solana Beach is going to implement the first ever Sand Compatibility Opportunistic Use Program (SCOUP) project by placing up to 25,000 Cubic Yards of high-quality sand on Fletcher Cove Beach beginning Monday April 19, 2021 and ending May 28, 2021. This important beach sand replenishment program, which has been in the City’s work Plan for several years, is intended to preserve and maintain our beaches and to protect our coastal bluffs and public and private property from Coastal Storm Damage erosion and possible failure.
Under this first ever SCOUP Project, sand will be transported from the Solana 101 construction site at the corner of Sierra Ave and Dahlia Drive to Fletcher Cove Beach using several dump trucks. The haul route for the activity will be along South Sierra Avenue from Dahlia Drive through the Fletcher Cove Parking Lot and down the Fletcher Cove Beach Access Ramp where sand will be deposited during low tide into the nearshore area (please see the Haul Route map attached). Trucks will then return to the construction site to repeat the process.
To protect public during this operation, the Fletcher Cove parking lot, Fletcher Cove Beach and the overlook area next to the Lifeguard Station will be closed during sand deposit operations. Sand deposit operations will occur daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM during low tide windows. Fletcher Cove Park, including the playground and bathrooms, will remain open during this operation and access to the beach will be restored after 5:00 PM every day. The Fletcher Cove parking lot will be closed during the week (Monday through Friday) and will only be open for vehicular use during the weekends. Access to the beach will also be open during the weekends (please see site closure map attached). Signage will be placed directing beach goers to the City’s other nearby beach access points.
The City is asking for the public’s patience and cooperation during what we recognize will be an inconvenient – but temporary – project for our residents and visitors. City Staff will be closely monitoring this operation to minimize any impacts to our residents and the surrounding community throughout the project. Please avoid the construction zone to the extent feasible and contact the City’s Engineering Department at (858) 720-2470 if you have any questions or concerns.
