Community Choice Aggregation Update The City Council will consider approving the Implementation Plan and introducing an Ordinance to establish the Solana Beach CCA program at the November 15th, 2017 City Council meeting.  The goal of a CCA is to provide a higher percentage of renewable energy electricity at competitive and potentially cheaper rates than the local Investor Owned Utility (IOU), San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E), while giving the community local control and promoting the development of renewable power sources, programs and local job growth. The City, along with its expert consultant team, has entered into Phases 2 and 3 of CCA program development, which includes finalizing the Implementation Plan and introducing an Ordinance to establish the CCA.   It is important to emphasize that the adoption of the Ordinance and approval of the Implementation Plan does not commit the City to launching a CCA. The City Council can, at any point, stop the development and launch of the program. These are just the next required steps as the City moves through the process of potentially launching a CCA. As mentioned previously at City Council meetings, the City will continue to conduct public outreach on the rate comparisons, renewable energy percentage scenarios, financial safeguards and potential local programs based on community feedback.   For any questions, please contact Assistant City Manager Dan King at dking@cosb.org or at 858-720-2477. Veterans Day Ceremony  Saturday, November 11, 2017 from 11 am to Noon  The City of Solana Beach and Solana Beach Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5431 will jointly host a Veterans Day ceremony this Saturday, November 11, 2017, from 11 am to Noon at the La Colonia Community Center, 715 Valley Avenue.  A "Feathers from Heaven" doves release will occur, Camp Pendleton Young Marines will be the honor guard, and the Santa Fe Christian School Band will perform patriotic songs. Also participating in the ceremony will be Deputy Mayor Ginger Marshall and Randy Treadway, Commander for VFW Post 5431. Special guest speaker, Sergeant Major Mark O'Loughlin, will address the community. Light refreshments will be served. Docents from the Civic and Historical Society will be on hand to conduct tours of the Historical Museum. The event is free of charge and open to the public.  View the Event Flyer. Seascape Sur Beach Access Stairway to be Closed for Maintenance and Repairs November 6, 2017 through March 30, 2018 Maintenance and repair work is expected to begin on the Seascape Sur Beach Access Stairway on Monday, November 6, 2017.   The public beach access stairway and sidewalk connecting to South Sierra Avenue will be closed to the public beginning November 6, 2017 through approximately March 30, 2018. As part of this project, the concrete walkway that connects the top of the stairs to South Sierra Avenue will be removed and replaced in order to repair tree root damage to the existing sidewalk. Also as part of this project, the wood stairway treads (walking/stepping surface) and metal connectors and fasteners will be replaced in order to repair corrosion that has occurred over the years due to the marine environment.   Alternate beach access can be found at Fletcher Cove to the north and Del Mar Shores to the south.  For any questions regarding construction activities, please contact the City of Solana Beach Engineering Department at (858) 720-2470.  City of Solana Beach | (858) 720-2400 | www.ci.solana-beach.ca.us

Notice of Proposed Public Art - Fire Station Art and Landscape Project

Notice of 45-Day Public Comment Period for Proposed Fire Station Art and Landscape Project The Public Review Process Ends December 16th The is a courtesy announcement that the public review period for the City's Fire Station Art and Landscape Project is now open and the City is accepting comments on the proposed project. The 45-day public review process officially began on November 1st and ends December 16th. During this time, the City is asking the community to please provide your input and comments on this proposed public art and landscaping project. The comments will be presented to the City Council for their consideration after the public comment period is over.  The selected proposal is titled the "Firewall" by artist Betsy Schulz and Van Dyke Landscape Architects. The materials for the sculpture consist of glass and steel with rusted patina, coated with 2-part epoxy paint. The structure will be approximately 9 to 11 feet tall, 4-foot-wide and between 1 to 2 feet thick. The 4-foot sides are red, orange, and yellow chunk glass carefully arranged into a mosaic behind metal mesh and internally lit by led lights. The proposal also includes complementary landscaping replacing the existing grass turf with drought tolerant, native plants that enhance the art piece to provide a robust, spectacular project. The proposal is shown below. A mock-up showing the dimensions of the art wall has been placed onsite on the lawn in front of the Fire Station with a sign depicting the proposed landscaping. Also, the artist has created a small sample of the wall and placed it in the City Hall lobby for people to come and observe what the wall will look like with the mosaic chunk glass and lighting.
