Have A Wonderful Thanksgiving!

The City of Solana Beach wishes our amazing community a happy Thanksgiving! This cherished holiday offers a time to gather with loved ones, enjoy a delicious feast, and appreciate life’s simple joys. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spread kindness and foster a spirit of gratitude across our community. May your Thanksgiving be filled with love, laughter, and special moments with family and friends.

Thanksgiving Holiday Observances

City Hall Closure

Solana Beach City Hall and all non-essential City buildings will be closed on Thursday, November 27th & Friday, November 28th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Regular hours will resume on Monday, December 1st. Have a wonderful holiday!

EDCO Service Delay

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, EDCO's residential collection service will not be performed on Thursday, November 27th. Residents with a trash pickup scheduled for Thursday or after will have a one-day residential delay in service.

Reminder to Properly Dispose of Fat, Oil, & Grease

Thanksgiving often means dealing with extra fat, oil, and grease (FOG). To help prevent plumbing issues this holiday, the City would like to remind residents not to pour FOG down the kitchen sink and to dispose of it properly. FOG is one of the leading causes of sewer backups because it doesn’t mix with water and quickly solidifies inside pipes. To properly dispose it, scrape FOG into your organics cart, or pour cooled grease into a sealed, leakproof container and take it to an EDCO Buyback Center. A few extra steps in the kitchen can help you avoid expensive plumbing issues later on.

What to Do with Sandbags After the Storm

Once the weather clears, we often receive questions about what to do with used sandbags. The City does not take back used sandbags, but there are plenty of good options for residents to consider. You can save the sandbags for future storms if they are still in good condition. You may reuse clean sand in your garden or landscaping. If the sandbags are no longer usable, you can dispose of them responsibly by taking them to a local landfill; please do not place sandbags in regular trash bins. If any bags came into contact with floodwater, mud, or other contaminants, they may require special handling and should be disposed of carefully.

Clean Energy Alliance PeakSmart Program

The Clean Energy Alliance (CEA) just launched their pilot PeakSmart Savers program! This program offers discounted rates to eligible residential customers who will voluntarily reduce or shift when they use electricity. The goal of this program is to reduce demand on the electric grid during “peak” hours, typically from 4:00-9:00 PM. Learn more about the program and see if you are eligible below.

Senior Holiday Gift Baskets Donation Drive

There are only a few weeks left to donate items for our Senior Holiday Gift Baskets. This special drive really helps brighten the holiday season for local seniors who may be spending the holidays on their own. Residents are encouraged to drop off small comfort items like calendars, puzzle books, cozy socks, holiday treats, or warm beverages in the designated bin at City Hall. You can also help by letting us know of any seniors who may benefit from a gift basket. Help us spread a little extra holiday cheer this season! The final day to donate is Wednesday, December 10th.

Solana Beach Fire Department Toy Drive

The Fire Department is hosting their annual Holiday Toy Drive to bring smiles to the children of local Marine Corp families, and your generosity can make all the difference! They are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages, from toddlers to teens. Whether it’s a cuddly teddy bear or a cool sketchbook, every gift helps brighten a local United States Marine Corp family's holiday. Toys go directly to the Edson Range Chapel to distribute during their annual Christmas party. Donations will be accepted now through December 23rd.

Help Us Identify Seniors in Need

for the Senior Holiday Gift Basket Drive

Do you know a senior in Solana Beach who will be spending the holidays alone and could use a little extra cheer? The City has partnered with Solana Beach Community Connections (SBCC) to support isolated “Solo-Agers” by assembling thoughtful holiday gift baskets. The holiday season can be especially difficult for seniors who live alone, have recently lost a spouse, or have family far away. If you know a senior in our community who would benefit from a warm gesture this season, please share their name and contact information with SBCC at info@solanabeachcc.org. If not, you can still help by donating cheerful items in the dedicated bin at City Hall. Together, we can ensure no senior in Solana Beach feels overlooked this holiday season.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

from the Solana Beach Fire Department

The kitchen truly becomes the heart of the home during Thanksgiving. From perfecting family recipes to baking pies and decorating desserts, everyone loves being part of the holiday preparations. But with more cooks in the kitchen and the holiday hustle, distractions can easily arise, increasing the risk of kitchen fires. That’s why keeping fire safety in mind is especially important during this busy and festive time. As you plan your Thanksgiving feast and gather loved ones, remember that a few simple safety tips, like staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping flammable items away from heat sources, can help ensure a joyful and accident-free holiday celebration.

Sustainable Tips for Hosting Thanksgiving

The holiday season brings celebrations and time with loved ones, but it can also lead to increased waste and energy use. By making thoughtful, sustainable choices, we can enjoy the festivities while reducing our environmental impact. The City encourages residents to celebrate consciously with these sustainable hosting tips:

Provide Recycling &

Composting Options

Choose Reusable Tableware

Sustainable Home Decorations

Set up labeled bins for recycling, organic waste, and trash to make proper disposal easy for guests. Organizing waste stations reduces landfill contributions and makes your celebration more sustainable.

Swap disposable tableware for reusable plates, cups, and utensils to minimize waste. Set up a collection area for used dishes, and consider borrowing or renting extras if needed.

Choose or make decorations made from recycled or natural materials, such as pinecones or dried flowers. Avoid single-use plastics and recycle or compost decorations when the festivities are over.

Sustainable

Gift Giving

Plan Meals Carefully to Reduce Food Waste

Encourage Green

Transportation

Promote eco-friendly gift exchanges with handmade, experience-based, or ethically sourced items. Wrap gifts in recyclable materials like craft paper or newspaper for a festive and sustainable touch.

Make sure to plan meals with the right portion sizes based on your guest count to avoid overbuying and food waste. Encourage guests to take home leftovers in reusable containers.

Consider carpooling, biking, or using public transit when heading to your gatherings, and encourage your guests to do the same to help reduce the environmental impact of holiday travel.
