The City is aware of the mosquito activity throughout the community and especially in the neighborhoods adjacent to the San Elijo Lagoon. We have been and remain in contact with the County’s Department of Environmental Health and Quality and requested that they perform hand/ground treatment of the Lagoon (which they have done) and an aerial application over the San Elijo Lagoon as soon as possible. As you may be aware, the helicopter the County utilizes for their dry pellet larvicide application is currently undergoing repairs and is still unavailable. However, due to the increase in complaints and obvious increase in mosquito activity, the City has spoken with the County about utilizing a different helicopter that uses a spray application of "wet" liquid larvicide.

The County has agreed to perform a special aerial treatment on Monday, September 13th to the waterways in the San Elijo Lagoon.

A helicopter will apply larvicide to the lagoon in order to reduce mosquito breeding. The larvicide consists of a liquid formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti), a naturally-occurring bacteria that targets mosquito larvae but is safe to people, pets, plants, and wildlife, and is one of the same active ingredients as used in the County's routine pellet or dry aerial larvicide applications. More information about Bti can be found on the U.S. EPA’s mosquito control website.
