On August 16, 2020, Governor Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for the extreme heatwave that has struck California. Therefore, the City of Solana Beach, in collaboration with load-serving entities across the state of California, is encouraging residents (and businesses) to conserve energy from beginning the evening of Wednesday, August 19, 2020.

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) continues to experience considerable challenges on the electric grid during the state's record-breaking heatwave. The grid operator is working to secure every megawatt available; however, consumers should be prepared for the likelihood of power outages during the late afternoon and evening hours. Rotating outages occur in blocks, with some customers experiencing an outage of approximately one hour, or until the CAISO issues an order to discontinue load curtailment efforts. Consumers can check SDG&E news for the current list of circuits that are expected to be impacted if asked to initiate rotating outages.

CAISO has issued a Flex Alert through Wednesday, August 19, 2020, calling for consumers to increase electricity conservation efforts voluntarily. To help reduce stress on the power grid, please conserve energy as much as possible between 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Here are some steps you can take to conserve energy during the peak period:
  • Set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permits
  • Run appliances, like laundry or dishwasher, in the morning or after 10 p.m.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights
  • Unplug unused electrical devices
  • Close blinds and drapes
  • Limit time the refrigerator door is open
  • Charge your electric vehicles in the morning
  • Set pool pumps to run in the early morning or late at night
