Strong Santa Ana Winds are expected to hit San Diego County starting on Thursday, October 10th, and lasting through Saturday, October 12th. With the increased wind, low relative humidity, and dry fuels, there is an increased fire risk. One ember is all it takes to start a significant brush fire.

Please help reduce the risk of wildfire by following these guidelines:

  • Never mow or trim dry grass on a Red Flag Day or Santa Ana Wind Day. Mow before 10 a.m. on a day when it is not hot and windy.
  • Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
  • Spark arrestors are required on all portable gasoline-powered equipment.
  • Residents should make sure they have defensible space around structures.
  • Focus on the first 5 feet around your structure, removing combustible items such as patio furniture or stacks of wood.
  • Remove leaves and needles from gutters.
  • Protect openings in structures where hot embers can enter.
  • Never drive your vehicle or trailer through dry grass when it is hot and windy.
