Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving!

The City of Solana Beach wishes our amazing community a happy Thanksgiving! This cherished holiday offers a time to gather with loved ones, enjoy a delicious feast, and appreciate life’s simple joys. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spread kindness and foster a spirit of gratitude across our community. May your Thanksgiving be filled with love, laughter, and special moments with family and friends.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

from the Solana Beach Fire Department

The kitchen truly becomes the heart of the home during Thanksgiving. From perfecting family recipes to baking pies and decorating desserts, everyone loves being part of the holiday preparations. But with more cooks in the kitchen and the holiday hustle, distractions can easily arise, increasing the risk of kitchen fires. That’s why keeping fire safety in mind is especially important during this busy and festive time. As you plan your Thanksgiving feast and gather loved ones, remember that a few simple safety tips, like staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping flammable items away from heat sources, can help ensure a joyful and accident-free holiday celebration.

Sustainable Hosting Tips for the Holidays!

The holiday season is a time for joy, togetherness, and celebration—but it can also lead to increased waste and energy use. By making thoughtful, sustainable choices, we can enjoy the festivities while reducing our environmental impact. The City encourages residents to celebrate consciously with these sustainable hosting tips:

Provide Recycling

& Composting Options

Set up labeled bins for recycling, organic waste, and trash to make proper disposal easy for guests. Organizing waste stations reduces landfill contributions and makes your celebration more sustainable.

Choose Reusable Tableware

Swap disposable tableware for reusable plates, cups, and utensils to minimize waste. Set up a collection area for used dishes, and consider borrowing or renting extras if needed.

Decorate Sustainably

Opt for decorations made from recycled or natural materials, such as pinecones or dried flowers. Avoid single-use plastics and recycle or compost decorations when the festivities are over.

Sustainable Gift Giving

Promote eco-friendly gift exchanges with handmade, experience-based, or ethically sourced items. Wrap gifts in recyclable materials like craft paper or newspaper for a festive and sustainable touch.

Plan Meals Carefully to Reduce Food Waste

Plan meals and portion sizes based on your guest count to avoid overbuying and waste. Encourage guests to take home leftovers in reusable containers.

Encourage Green Transportation

Encourage guests to carpool, bike, or take public transit to your gathering to help reduce the environmental impact of holiday travel.

Help Us Identify Seniors in Need

for the Senior Holiday Gift Basket Drive

Do you know a senior in Solana Beach who might benefit from a little extra holiday cheer? The Solana Beach Community Connections is seeking the community’s help to identify isolated “Solo-Agers” who could use a thoughtful holiday gift basket. These baskets are designed to brighten the season for seniors living alone, especially those without nearby family or who have recently lost a loved one. If you know someone who might appreciate this gesture, please let SBCC know. If not, you can still help by donating cheerful items like holiday mugs, chocolates, puzzles, or cozy gifts in the dedicated bin at City Hall, or by making a financial contribution to SBCC so they can shop for the perfect gifts. Together, we can ensure no senior in Solana Beach feels overlooked this holiday season.
