| City of Solana Beach WEEKLY UPDATE July 12, 2024 | | Beach Fires Guidelines & Responsible Practices | | Summer has made Solana Beach a hub of outdoor activity, making it crucial for all residents and visitors to be aware of beach regulations. With the seasonal increase in fires at the beach, we have seen many incidents of illegal fires made from wooden pallets which, once burnt, leave hot coals and nails in our newly placed sand which can endanger beachgoers.
All beach fires must be limited to an elevated and contained fire pit (bring your own), and can be either wood or fuel burning. Help preserve our beaches by following our Beach Fire Regulations and a “Pack-in, Pack-out” policy. This means any items brought to the beach, including burnt materials, must be taken away when you leave. Dumping burnt material in city trash bins can spark fires, or cause the plastic bins to melt and leak, creating environmental hazards and unsightly messes. | | Please follow these Fires on the Beach Guidelines to ensure everyone's safety:
- All fires must be contained within portable fire device that is less than 3 feet in diameter, elevated off the ground, and has a solid metal bottom with sides to enclose the fire.
- All beach fires should be set at least 10 feet away from cliff edges due to their instability.
- Fires on the beach are allowed only between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
The following actions are prohibited: - Burning fires directly in the sand or in a "fire ring" without a bottom
- Burning pallets or any wood containing nails, screws, bolts, or other hardware.
- Leaving fires unattended at any time.
- Disposing of burnt materials in the sand or city trash cans (pack-in, pack-out policy).
- Consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach or in the park areas.
| | Maintaining the beauty and safety of Solana Beach is a collective effort. While lifeguards oversee daytime activities, nighttime adherence to regulations relies on community responsibility. Instances of prohibited beach fires and alcohol consumption not only violate local laws but also compromise the natural beauty of our coastline. Let’s work together to protect our beloved beach environment and enjoy our summer safely. | | Genasys PROTECT – Stay Connected, Be Informed | | | As we enter fire season, emergency communication and information are vitally important. First responders in San Diego County work tirelessly to ensure we have the best tools that effectively communicate life-saving emergency information to the public. Genasys PROTECT is San Diego County’s newest effort to communicate speedy and reliable emergency information. Genasys PROTECT allows first responder agencies to provide disaster notifications, evacuation information, shelter locations, road closures and much more to the public in a timely manner. Information from Genasys Protect can be viewed at the website or by downloading the Genasys Protect App. Using the app, you can subscribe to specific “zones”, such as areas you live, work, or frequently visit. The first step to protect yourself and your home from mosquitoes is to prevent breeding by promptly emptying standing water from watering cans and plant drip pans, and fixing leaky faucets and hoses. Keep your patio clear of potential breeding debris and remember to wear long sleeves, pants, or use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 when outdoors.
To help keep our community safe, the County Vector Control Program (VCP) uses mosquito larvicide applications via helicopters in areas that are difficult to treat manually. These granular larvicides target mosquito larvae specifically and are safe for people, pets, plants, and wildlife. The next aerial larvicide treatment scheduled for the San Elijo Lagoon is July 17th and 18th. Additional applications are scheduled for August and September. | | City Council Summer Break | | | Please note that the City Council meetings scheduled for July 24th, August 14th, and August 28th are cancelled for the summer break.
