A Heartfelt Farewell to Mo Sammak

The City of Solana Beach bids a heartfelt farewell to Mo Sammak, our Director of Public Works/City Engineer, as he retires after 16 years of exemplary service. While we are excited for Mo as he begins this well-deserved next chapter, his leadership, dedication, and kindness will be deeply missed by the community he served so passionately.

Mo’s leadership brought many cherished projects to life, including the Fletcher Cove Park and Community Center Renovations, La Colonia Park upgrades with a new playground, skate park, basketball court, and pickleball court, the Safe Routes to School Program, the La Colonia Veterans Courtyard renovation, Sand Replenishment Project, the pedestrian undercrossing linking lagoon trails to Harbaugh Trails and the beach, and Highway 101 west-side improvements. He also laid the groundwork for future efforts like the Lomas Santa Fe Corridor Project, Marine Safety Center, Glenmont Neighborhood Pocket Park, and the Santa Helena Neighborhood Trail.

Beyond his impressive accomplishments, Mo’s strong work ethic, great sense of humor, and positive energy has left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing or working with him. His engineering expertise, innovative ideas, and exceptional leadership brought out the best in his colleagues on both personal and professional levels, while his genuine kindness and great costumer service made him a beloved member of the community. His dedication and contributions will continue to benefit Solana Beach for generations to come.

We appreciate our very own Dan Goldberg accepting the appointment as the Acting City Engineer and Director of Engineering and Public Works while the City conducts a recruitment for the permanent position.

Thank you, Mo, for your service and heart. Solana Beach is better because of you. Happy retirement, you’ve earned it!

High Surf Advisory

Another round of dangerous high surf for the winter season is forecasted for Sunday, December 22nd through Thursday, December 26th. Waves at west-facing breaks, including Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas, could reach heights of 15 to 20 feet! Lifeguards strongly advise that only expert surfers enter the water during these conditions. Know your limits. Rip currents, longshore currents, and large water surges will pose extreme hazards. Even when walking along the berm or beach, use caution and watch for large wave surges. When in doubt, speak with a lifeguard about beach and water safety.
