Pinion Restoration Completed!

The popular public art piece the Pinion has been refurbished by the artist and returned and is even more beautiful than ever! The sculptor, Jon Koehler, has restored the 20-foot kinetic stainless steel sculpture back to its original condition while further enhancing the piece to withstand the coastal environment, as it is now part of the City's Permanent Art Collection! The piece was safely returned to its original location at the corner of N. Cedros Avenue and E. Cliff Street on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

The Pinion was first installed back in 2013 as part of the City’s Temporary Art Program and quickly became a community favorite. The positive response from the community led the City Council to approve the purchase of the art piece in October 2021. City Council also directed Staff to design a new and improved permanent base to ensure continuous kinetic movement. The surrounding area will soon be enhanced with drought tolerant plants and succulents.

New Permanent Art Piece Rio

The City's permanent Public Art Collection just got bigger and better! You may have already noticed the newest permanent art piece Rio, by Richard Harmetz, at the Tide Park beach access located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Solana Vista Drive. This beautiful bronze statue was on loan to the City for one year as part of the City's 2022 Temporary Public Art Program rotation.

Since its arrival in November 2021, the community's response to Rio has been overwhelmingly positive and resulted in Mr. Harmertz generously offering to donate his art piece to the City's permanent art collection. Located at a popular local beach access, Rio has several notable features that perfectly fit its location. The City is extremely appreciative of this donation and would like to send a special thanks to Mr. Harmertz for his generosity. The Rio is a welcome addition to the City’s growing public art collection.
