Concerns Regarding Mosquitos

Concerns Regarding Mosquitos
As you have probably noticed, there has been an increase in the number of mosquitoes recently due to a variety of factors, including the warmer weather and high tides. The County Vector Control Department is responsible for mosquito abatement, and they have scheduled aerial applications throughout the year to address these issues. The next aerial application is scheduled for today, August 29th, and you might see the helicopters spraying both the San Elijo and San Dieguito lagoons. Another aerial larvicide application is scheduled for September 19, 2018 and, if necessary, October 10, 2018.

Some useful mosquito (and other vectors) information can be found on the County of San Diego’s vector control website and useful fact sheets on preventing mosquito breeding and protecting against mosquito bites can be found here.

The Basics: Getting rid of mosquito-breeding sites is critical to lowering the number of mosquitoes in our community. A mosquito only needs a tiny bottle cap-size pool of water to lay up to 300 eggs, which is why removing standing water is critical.

  • Do not leave standing water in watering cans, empty after each use.
  • Do not let ANY water sit in drip pans under plants. Place sand or fine gravel in the drip pans. Make sure pots are draining well and there are no puddles, even tiny ones can become a breeding ground.
  • Fix any leaky faucets and hoses. Mosquitoes can breed in the water that pools underneath them.
  • Water can collect in cans, bottles, toys, coffee cups, pet bowls, etc. Clear your patio of any potential breeding debris.
  • Mosquito fish may be picked up free of charge at different locations throughout San Diego County.

Finally, to report mosquito activity or breeding, please call the County at (858) 694-2888 or email vector@sdcounty.ca.gov.

Labor Day Amtrak Blackout & September 8-9 Rail Closure

Labor Day Amtrak Blackout
& September 8-9 Rail Closure
Coinciding with the Labor Day holiday weekend, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains will not accept COASTER fare on Friday, August 31, though Tuesday, September 4. During this time, COASTER passengers that utilize the R2R program will need to purchase Amtrak fare for Amtrak trains.

In order to facilitate infrastructure improvements along the coastal rail corridor, there will be no COASTER or Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service in San Diego County on the weekend of September 8-9.

On the Friday preceding the closure, September 7, southbound Amtrak R2R trains A792 and A796, will complete their trips at Oceanside Transit Center (OTC). Amtrak train A590 will operate through to Santa Fe Depot in San Diego.

During the closure weekend, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service will not be available south of OTC. Connecting bus service will require Amtrak reservations. Metrolink service to OTC will not be interrupted.

No replacement bus service connecting COASTER stations will be available. Alternatives for some COASTER passengers may include BREEZE Route 101 or MTS connections.

After the closure, coastal rail service will re-open for regularly scheduled service in time for the Monday morning commute. Passengers should note that trains may be delayed up to 15 minutes on Monday, September 10.

While no passenger rail service will be available during this closure, other vehicles and equipment will operate along the railroad right-of-way and on the rail at non-specified times. Residents along the corridor should remain alert at legal crossings, and not trespass on the railroad right-of-way.

For trip planning assistance, customers can contact NCTD Customer Service at 760-966-6500, or visit GoNCTD.com.

How To Read Your New Solana Energy Alliance Energy Bill

How To Read Your New
Solana Energy Alliance Energy Bill
As you are probably aware, the City recently launched the Solana Energy Alliance (SEA) giving you the opportunity to choose your energy provider. If you have not opted out, you are now a member of SEA. However, SDG&E will continue to provide gas and electric transmission and distribution services for all SEA customers, therefore, you will continue to receive your electric bill from SDG&E as before, with slight modifications to reflect your new energy provider.

The attached document will help you better understand your new bill and allows you to compare your rates to what you would have paid if you had remained with SDG&E. This may also help with any confusion regarding the higher charges you might be seeing on your bill lately, experienced by both SDG&E customers and SEA customers. This is due to the annual switch to summer rates as well as unusually hot summer days.

As a reminder, here are the Joint Rate Comparisons mutually agreed to and approved by both SDG&E and SEA.

As always, if you have any questions about your bill or SEA, please do not hesitate to call our dedicated customer service center at (858) 720-4422.
