Coastal Storm Damage Reduction &

Beach Replenishment Project Update

Great news about the sand replenishment project! Even with Monday's storm, the project is going well and on schedule. Here's a quick update: Additional heavy equipment will be delivered this Friday, January 26th, prompting the closure of the parking lot at Fletcher Cove for public parking from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This additional equipment will support ongoing work north of Fletcher Cove Beach. Beach access to the north of Fletcher Cove will remain closed for the next 3 weeks, considering safety concerns related to construction equipment and activity. Although the vehicular ramp at Fletcher Cove will stay closed, pedestrian access along the south side walkway and the beach south of the Cove will reopen to the public on Saturday. Please note that the construction schedule is subject to change, and we appreciate the public's patience during this crucial project.

Understanding Electricity Time-of-Use Rate Plans

Did you know most residents are enrolled in the Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan for electricity? Customers on the TOU rate plan pay varying prices per kilowatt-hour (kWh) throughout the day, with higher per-unit prices during designated "on-peak" periods (4:00-9:00 pm) compared to "off-peak" and "super off-peak" periods. The adoption of TOU rate plans in California support a cleaner and more reliable power grid, particularly in Solana Beach, where reliance on clean, renewable energy sources peaks during optimal conditions. Residents can capitalize on lower costs and contribute to a cleaner and more reliable grid by adjusting electricity usage to "off-peak" and "super off-peak" periods when renewable resources such as solar are more abundant and energy demand is lowest.

Voluntary Survey Sent Out to County Residents

to Report Storm Damage

San Diego County residents and businesses who experienced flooding damage during Monday’s storm can report the damage through an online survey. The survey is intended for individuals, households, and small businesses who may have been impacted by the recent heavy storm to report damages. The County will compile the reports and utilize the data to seek state and federal disaster assistance. Completing the survey does not guarantee disaster assistance. Completing the form does not guarantee that you will be eligible to receive any disaster relief assistance. Filling out the survey is not a substitution for filing a claim with your insurance.

Only Rain Down the Storm Drain!

According to the National Weather Service, Monday's storm was the 4th wettest day in San Diego since 1850. As we start to get more rain, let’s all do our part to help keep our beaches and oceans clean! Water that goes into the streets, gutters, and storm drains in our neighborhoods IS NOT TREATED before it reaches our local creeks, rivers, and the ocean. All sources of pollution, including soil and sediment, are prohibited from leaving your property and entering streets or storm drains. Only rainwater is allowed in the streets and storm drains.

Coastal Storm Damage Reduction & Beach Replenishment Project Construction Has Begun!

The Coastal Storm Damage Reduction and Beach Replenishment Project construction kicked off last Tuesday, January 16th. This federal project, spanning 50 years, aims to restore the city's beaches and protect our coastal bluffs through sand replenishment. The Fletcher Cove parking lot, park overlook, and beach access ramp will be temporarily closed for public safety reasons during equipment delivery. The beach and water will be closed daily during active sand placement operations from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, lasting approximately 60 days. During the initial construction phase, the public is advised to use the three other public coastal access points - Tide Park, Del Mar Shores, and Seascape Sur. The public may notice increased lighting from the dredge and support vessels throughout the night which are required to meet safety and environmental regulations. The community's support and patience are appreciated during this essential project.

The Importance of Properly

Storing & Disposing Lithium Batteries

Unfortunately, there are more and more dangerous incidents being reported involving explosions or fires caused by improper storage and disposal of household items with Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, commonly found in cell phones, laptops, power tools, e-cigarettes, e-bikes, and electric scooters. To help prevent these types of explosions, Li-Ion batteries should be stored in well-ventilated, dry areas, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and water, and kept isolated from other batteries. Used batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be properly recycled and NEVER placed in the curbside trash, recycling, or organics carts! If batteries are not discarded properly, they can potentially explode and cause a fire in a collection cart, truck, or in a disposal facility when crushed.

Disposal Programs for Batteries, Plastic Bags, & Other Tricky Items

Knowing the most environmentally beneficial ways to dispose of everyday products is essential, especially when dealing with hazardous items and tricky materials. Don’t know where to properly dispose of household hazardous waste and other tricky items? As a Solana Beach resident, there are several options.

City Hall Plastic Bag & Battery Drop-Off Program

Recycle household batteries and clean plastic bags at City Hall! Bins inside City Hall are dedicated to these items that are challenging to dispose of properly. Avoid putting single-use plastic bags in your recycling bin at home, as they damage sorting machines. Instead, drop off clean bags at City Hall, where they are compressed into bales for recycling into building materials. For batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, avoid home disposal to prevent contamination and fire risks. Residents are encouraged to use the designated bins inside City Hall to safely dispose of batteries and to recycle plastic bags.

Solana Beach Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program

Did you know it is illegal and unsafe to throw Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in the trash, storm drain, or sewer? The good news is that the City provides a convenient HHW disposal program with two options. Solana Beach residents can safely dispose of common HHW items, such as household cleaners, used motor oil and filters, pool cleaners, automobile fluids, landscaping chemicals, batteries, mercury thermometers, non-empty aerosol cans, paint, mercury switches, or fluorescent tubes, at the regional HHW facilities in Vista and Poway free of charge. Or residents can schedule a home pick-up for a small co-pay of $10 (free for homebound or those over the age 65.)
